I, the grant applicant, am living independently, with or without a spouse, from 1 October, 2010

Important:

If you are under 23 years of age on the 1 January of the year of entry or re-entry to an approved course, you are not considered to be living independently of your parent(s) or guardian(s) even if you are not residing with them. This is the case whether or not you have a spouse. Only mature students, i.e. those over 23 years of age on the 1 January of the year of entry or re-entry to an approved course, who are living independently of their parent(s) or guardian(s) are considered independent applicants and are assessed as such.

If you are not a mature student you should choose the previous option (‘I, the grant applicant, am living with my parent(s) or guardians(s) from 1 October, 2010') to see what reckonable income bands apply in your case. This option will apply even if you are not residing with your parent(s) or guardian(s). Otherwise, you may proceed within this option.

Firstly, please read the definition of dependent children for the purposes of the student grant schemes:

Dependent children means children, including foster children, of an independent mature applicant, who, on 1 October 2010, were:

(i) under 16 years of age, or
(ii) 16 years of age or over and:
  1. are attending a full-time course of study at an educational institution and are dependent on their parents, or
  2. are medically certified as permanently unfit for work;
