Additional Cost of Education Allowance The BTEA scheme recognises that students embarking on further or higher education may face ‘set-up’ costs at the beginning of each academic year, such as books or a deposit to secure accommodation. The scheme provides an annual ‘cost of education’ allowance to BTEA recipients at the start of each academic year. Currently, the allowance is €500. The cost of education allowance has also been extended to people signing on for unemployment credits.
